How can thermal storage technologies help reducing the energy poverty and carbon emissions? Based on the understanding that the world uses over twice as much heat as electricity, heat batteries help solve numerous problems by storing energy as heat and releasing it when and where it is needed. At Sunamp this is achieved at lower cost and higher efficiency than competing technologies (e.g. electrical batteries, hydrogen electrolysis or fuel cells) utilising inorganic, non-toxic, salt-based Phase Change Materials (PCM), which absorbs and releases latent thermal energy during the process of melting and freezing.
Latest advancements in the thermal storage technology are transforming how we generate, store and use heat and cool around the world and it is impacting how we tackle climate change and safeguard our planet for future generations. This unique technology can be extended across sectors: up the size scale to containerised multi-megawatt industrial heat/cool applications; and into the transportation sector. The company is also providing local solutions to address fuel poverty: the innovative technology has enabled more efficient utilisation of different renewable technologies and it positively impacts tenants seeking to reduce their energy costs by up to 75% .
In the RENAISSANCE Project, Sunamp has tailored the technology to the pilots’ needs, characterised by higher flexibility and integration with other vectors (current TRL 7). The high thermal power capability and flexibility of Sunamp heat storage solution “UniQ” will facilitate the integration of higher share of renewables and reduce excess heat losses by delivering multiple services within a dynamic integrated market. Additionally, it will contribute to the reduction of the local emissions and LLCOE by replacing high-pollutant and expensive peak plants. Demonstration in operational conditions at Greek and Spanish pilot sites will bring this innovative solution close to market.
